On a warm Wednesday, May 23rd, 2018, the Roy J. Wasson Academic Campus was in search for Tesla’s Science class pet. A 10-inch iguana named Elaine. She was last seen between 11 and 11:30 am in the classroom window of Mr. Fowler’s room. There were reports that she climbed out the window as someone had seen her through the glass from outside.  She has been a part of Mr. Fowler’s class for roughly 18 years.  Students look forward to greeting Elaine every day.

Mrs. Jones, the Tesla Middle School Math Teacher who shares the classroom with Mr. Fowler reported,  “Elaine is almost like the mascot for Tesla,  even though we are the ‘Tesla Tigers.'” This loss of Elaine was a devastating moment, not only Elaine’s owner Mr. Fowler, but for the students in  Mrs. Jones and Mr. Fowler’s classes.

While searching for Elaine, emails were sent out to the whole school staff.  Students from the other 10 schools and programs on the R.J. Wasson Academic Campus, who did not receive this email jumped in to help with the search.  They looked around the building, both indoors and out. A student reported a sighting of the iguana in the lunch room, which later on was found as a false clue.  Students were very concerned about finding Elaine.

Elaine was found on Thursday May 24th, 2018, in Mr. Fowler’s classroom.  Elaine had crawled behind a white board that was placed on the window sill, her favorite place during the school day.  She couldn’t be seen from inside the classroom.   After 2 days of searching, Elaine crawled out from behind the white board.  When Mr. Fowler turned around, there she was sunning herself on the window sill!  She was totally unconcerned with the stir she had caused or the search for her.

Staff and Students were relieved  that Elaine, the 10-inch iguana, is safe and sound.  Mr. Fowler is thankful to all staff and students who assisted with the search.
