In the Spring of 2017, students from the Bijou Link Crew initiated the Water Bottle Project to exchange the water fountains with water bottle filling stations. The Link Crew started the project to reduce the waste from plastic water bottles that would otherwise go into a local landfill.  Alternative benefits of the Water Bottle Project included less exposure germs caused by occasional gum or chewing tobacco within the drinking fountains.

In October of 2017, District 11 Facilities completed the installation of the Water Bottle Project with 2 water filling stations. One was installed in the second floor hallway and the other one was installed in the cafeteria. There was a delay in the initial installation timeline due to the hot water tank eroding.  More information on this can be found in the article Hot Water Troubles. The use of plastic water bottles will still be on Campus in vending machines and the four-ounce water bottles that are available in the cafeteria.

The main benefits of the water bottle filling stations are to filter the water and fill water bottles. It can also be used as a traditional water fountain. The implications include dramatically reducing the waste of plastic water bottles, easing the discomfort of disease that came with the old fountains, and allowing students to miss less class time by filling water bottles during passing periods.
