Wednesday September 19th at 12:30,  Mrs. Syrovy’s 5th period Environmental Science class went on a field trip to the Galileo Middle School gardens. The students were learning about ecosystems, soil, plants, and animals. Thirteen students attended the field trip.

Gardener Scott Wilson taught the class about the Galileo ecosystem. The ecosystem is one of the largest school gardens in District 11.  There are different gardens at Galileo and a domed green house.

Inside there is a pond with koi which helps all the plants in the greenhouse grow.  These plants  need a moist, humid environment, which the pond establishes for them.

Hawks have been seen on the fences near the gardens.

They catch the mice that invade the garden and help the plants to thrive.  Ladybugs eat the smaller damaging insects and there are other insects used to keep the ladybugs from damaging the plants.

The Envionmental Science class tasted fruits grown in the gardens, such as raspberries and currents.  They learned how different plants and animals strive to live in different ecosystems.

The field trip lasted about an hour and a half.  Once  students returned to the school, Mrs. Syrovy asked the class what they

learned and what their favorite part of the field trip was. Most students replied with eating the fruit was the best activity, because the fruit was fresh and organic.  A majority of students learned that it takes a lot of time to garden and grow good food.
