2017 Annual RJWAC Car Show, sponsored by Roy J. Wasson Academic Campus (RJWAC) and The Bijou Car Club, was held Saturday, September 16th in the North parking lot of the Campus. This year’s show was special, as it was held in honor of Careers Pathways Automotive Teacher, Bill Mahar, who passed away this summer.  To memorialize Mr. Bill Mahar, who loved the Car Show and automobiles, a balloon release was done to remember the great teacher and support Mahar gave to The Campus and his students.

This Car Show gives local car lovers a chance to win trophies and show off their pride and joy. All proceeds from the event go to a scholarship fund, which will be awarded in Bill Mahar’s name this year. Scholarships are for students who want to pursue a career in the automotive field. The 2017 scholarship recipients were Benjamin “Michael” Muchmoore, and Robert “Bobby” Davis.

Cars began lining up before 9 am to complete registration. As people began to show up to see these beauties, the atmosphere was livened with a performance by local musician, Steve Knepper.  He sang and played guitar, filling the air with musical classics from the 1950’s. Knepper says, “Playing music is a hobby”.  His day-time job is managing a water district. Mahar was a patient at the doctors’ office where Knepper’s wife works. Mahar and Mrs. Knepper spoke about the Car Show and her husband’s music and that’s how Knepper began playing music at the Car Show.  It was a perfect fit Knepper states because, “When I was a young boy, I would work on cars with my father and we would listen to 50’s music.” He feels “Music is healing for the people”.

Allen Donovan, owner of a 1937 Ford pickup truck and a 1979 Wasson graduate, was asked what he thinks a car show is all about? He responded, “Good people getting together to have a good time.” He heard about the car show through friends.  He liked the fact it benefited the auto shop and provided scholarships for its students.

Michael Wagner, father of 2008 Wasson graduate and owner of a 1978 Camero, says, “A car show is a common thread and universal language.” Wagner joined the Car Show,  “Because it’s a tradition with my son.”

While all the cars were great, there are limited categories for the 25 top winners.
