Every year the Board of Education for Colorado Springs School District 11 has an application process for a $1500 grant for high school students to assist them to attend and succeed in college. This grant is funded by Pepsi with the money coming from the vending machines that dispense Pepsi products in District 11 schools and buildings.

In order to apply, students must be able to show proof that they have been accepted into a college and  write an essay explaining why they want the grant and how they plan to use the money.  The grant  supports  students to attend college, but is not designated for specific college expenses.  Each District 11 high school can encourage students to apply.  One student is chosen from each high school.

This year, The Bijou School had 3 applicants.  This year’s chosen student, Sloan Cummings, is  a  graduating Senior at the Bijou School.  On May 9, 2017,  Shantelle Nix from The Board of Education, came to The Bijou School to personally congratulate and give Cummings her acceptance letter. On May 10th The Board of Education held a meeting at District 11 Administration Office and School Board Meeting room to meet Sloan, her friends, and family.  The Board congratulated Cummings on her acceptance to Pikes Peak Community College and give her the grant money.

Cummings was surprised to receive a poster-size check to represent the award.  She stated she would place it in her room to encourage her continued academic success.
