The Bijou Spoken Word Club started in January 2016, by student Ian Sikes and adviser Cynthia Nath.

With 5 members, every Thursday this interesting club gets together writing deep, realistic poetry.

The club is open for anyone.  The members and advisors help write and coach for performances, do free writes, and just hear what students have to say. Everyone deserves to be heard.  Slam Poetry and Spoken Word have many differences and they involve the same characteristics.

Slam Poetry started in 1987, as a Performance Competition of Poetry that’s judged by content. Spoken Word is a little different. The club is also performance based, but it’s not judged.

Spoken Word’s President, Ian Sikes, and members Riley Easler, Neeka Jefferies, Elena Slivka and Karl Minzenmayer performed for the first time on a live stage for more than 150 people in February, at Hear Here’s hosted Semi-Finals. More than 20 kids from various District 11 schools performed at Ivywild Performance Center.  They represented The Bijou School and Tesla Educational Opportunity Center.  The three members of the club did an amazing job.

Ian Sikes performed at Ivywild on Saturday March 12 at Hear Here’s Slam Poetry Event which was the City finals for slam poetry. Sikes placed 13th out of 20 poets.

Every Thursday from 3 to 4 pm in Nath’s Room, 204, Spoken Word Club gathers to write and express their poetry.
