Depression drains motivation and energy, making it difficult for people to do what makes them happy and to get better. A person with Depression can’t just “snap out of it”, but has some control. They key is to start with small baby steps. Overcoming depression isn’t quick nor easy, but it is far from being impossible. Feeling better takes time, by making little positive choices each day.

Recovering from depression requires action, and taking those actions may be difficult. But the key to recovery is starting with a few small goals and building up from there. Take things a day at a time and reward yourself for each accomplishment. These steps/goals may be small and seem to be ineffective, but they’ll quickly add up.

Seeking help and support plays a big role in recovering. It’s tough to battle depression alone and the nature of depression makes it hard to reach out for help. Isolation and loneliness can trigger or worsen depression. Maintaining close relationships emotionally can be key to overcoming it. Sometimes the thought of reaching out to even close friends or family members can feel exhausting and overwhelming.

People with depression may feel ashamed or guilty for their feelings and for neglecting relationships, but they need reminders that it’s the depression talking. Reaching out and seeking help is not a sign of weakness and it doesn’t mean they are a burden on others. There are people that care and are willing to help.
