Wrestling can easily be considered the harshest sport in the world. This sport is not just physically stressful, but mentally as well. Wrestlers are forced every day to dehydrate and starve themselves to make a weight class. This sport requires commitment. Many wrestlers go to practice with an empty stomach to lose as much as ten pounds in a week. That is pure commitment to one sport, to one match, to one tournament, to State quilting’s all just for wrestling.

Once the wrestler is on the mat, it’s not a joke – its brutal war. The opponent wants the same thing – to win. No matter what. Although there are rules, they still can’t stop the potential of the wrestler with injuring his or her opponent.

The main strength is mental. The wrestler has to be physically strong but its more mental, and him believing in his self. No fear when he gets out there he or she is alone on a battle field with the opponent big or small. He may be stronger but if the wrestlers mental strength is stronger than he will lose every time. It’s also him and knowing in his mind that he can, there can’t be any doubts in your mind. The opponent isn’t going to give you the win. The wrestler, otherwise known as a grappler, has to take it and it starts with mental strength. If the wrestler says he is going to lose because he sees him and he looks better than him than you are most likely going to lose, because a humans mind believes it and can make it true. It’s almost all mental.

It’s all in the head. From my experience when I wrestle whenever I can be fast and think faster and the person I go against. He then gets uncomfortable wrestling me and makes them unfocused and by than I have won half the battle. “You may be able to out muscle your rival but if he thinks faster and is more focused than you will lose”. (As my coach explains to me). It’s all in your mind. With me it’s all speed and offence whenever I’m in trouble I move as fast as I can so the challenger gets confused and I escape from him in that moment. However fast your mind can move your body follows the faster your mind is the faster you can be. Wrestling can be broken up into science of your mind and it makes sense. It’s not just who’s stronger than whoever your facing.
